tmux gives me a normal login shell instead of launching tmux. If any tmux pane is a shell, typing clear will return the shell prompt to the top of the pane but will not clear the pane of text until that text is written over. Place the following into the command prompt all as one line, it will open 4 tmux panels automatically (I know this wasn't the question, but this looks somewhat easier than what I saw posted): tmux new-session \ \split-window -v \ \split-window -h \ \select-pane -t 0 \ \split-window -h. If you just want to split screen on 2 panes (say horizontally), you can run this command (no tmux or shell scripts required): tmux new-session \ split-window -h \ You screen will look like this: Improve this answer. With split screen if you tap termux in recents menu to switch to termux app. If you're in an SSH session in the current pane and press the designated key combination, the pane will split, and the newly created pane will host an SSH session connected to the host you were previously on. In case it helps solve the main problem, there is other strange behavior. This TMUX plugin is a modern iteration of the concept sshh introduced. I don't think its the terminal emulator because I've tried it on Windows Terminal and cmder with the same results. In tmux builds that include this code, tmux key bindings that invoke new-window will create new a window with the same current working directory as the current pane’s active processes (as long as the default-path session option is empty it is by default). The tmux command you need is split-window -hf. A relevant feature landed in the tmux SVN trunk in early February 2012. The -f option creates a new pane spanning the full window height (with -h) or full window width (with -v), instead of splitting the active pane. Hold Ctrl+b, don’t release it and hold one of the arrow keys resize pane. The -b option causes the new pane to be created to the left of or above target-pane. You can split your window horizontally or vertically. Splitting is found in the View menu of Konsole. Because Konsole is a graphical terminal, you can control its split-screen feature with your mouse instead of your keyboard. When you start a new window or split pane on tmux, it always start with the directory from where you run tmux. I don't know if it's caused by WSL or if its a bug with tmux. Here is a list of a few basic tmux commands: Ctrl+b ' split pane horizontally. Notice the breaks in the dividing vertical line where abc bleeds into 123. When tmux opens, it looks like this: 1 |a ![]() ![]() I build a new tmux session, but when I attach to it, the right pane bleeds into the left pane on double newlines. ![]() I'm trying to use tmux version 3.1c on my Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 (WSL2) based Debian 11 container running in Docker (version 20.10.12).
